LAURA POWELL SMITH

Three days after graduating from the University of Georgia with her Bachelor in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting, Laura started her study in Architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology. After graduating in 2008 with her Masters, Laura moved to Augusta, Georgia were she worked at a small design firm with work that ranged from residential to commercial to large scale government projects.

When her husband wrapped up his program and residence, they moved back to  her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Laura spent the next four years working at TVS Design in the Hospitality section of the firm while welcoming two children to her family. During this time, Laura helped her husband build his practice, taught herself bookkeeping, HR, and all things dental related while also pursuing a position at Georgia Tech teaching young designers entering their studies.  After the birth of her second child, Laura moved positions to Blur Workshop and then on the arrival of her third child was fortunate enough to take a sabbatical from her career to focus on her family as well as her art.  When her youngest was old enough to enter a full time program, Laura went back to work and moved to the interiors side of things at Atelier Davis, primarily focusing on residential projects.

Fifteen years post graduation from Georgia Tech, Laura decided it was time to focus on her own practice both in design and art. Laura enjoys working with clients, learning their routines ensuring that the design is both beautiful and functional.  Laura’s projects tie together art and architecture with a strong attention to detail, scale, light and materiality.  There is no project too small, just ask her husband who is routinely pitched to, slowly transforming their house into a home for their family.
